0.2 Values from Each Knowledge Domain

Version 1.3 December 2016                                                        Previous Version

Where do values come from?  How can we find meaning?  What is a reasonable path to follow?

How we respond to the issues we face depends on what we believe and what we value most.

Values are not things infusing the ether, like a herbal tea from the celestial tea pot.

Values come from within, from the choices we make, based on beliefs about the nature of the world.  They may align with our natural inclinations, but our values are chosen by us.  And we should, and can, justify our choices and hence the values we adopt.

Meaning comes from seeing our life in a wider context.  For theists this context is God(s), our relationship with Him.  For some other religions the context includes stories about enlightenment.

In these pages we show how we can work out what values are reasonable, and how we can justify them.  We base our values on the reasonable beliefs we arrive at in all of domains of knowledge, which clarify which choices are open to us.  We find meaning and purpose without invoking the supernatural.

We break down all of knowledge into the following domains.  Our global beliefs are covered in seven Parts, one for each domain, plus Part 8 which ties it all together.

Analysis:

1. Philosophy,

2. Science and

3. History.

Is it reasonable to break down all our relevant knowledge into these seven domains?

Click on feedback, or add a comment below, to tell us what you think, or suggest improvements.

Expression:

4. Religion and

5. Culture.

Action:

6. Personal Practice and

7. Politics.

This introduction outlines how our study of each knowledge domain impacts on our value choices.

To make value choices we must consider the options available?  What do we believe they are?

   Values are mostly about people:

● We acknowledge other people are substantially like ourselves, despite our differences; and

● We choose to value human beings, humanity as a whole, and life in general.

● This is reflected in our core values of: Life, Love, Responsibility, Equality and Hope.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of Country, throughout all colonised lands, and their connections to land, waters and community. We pay respect by giving voice to truth, values and social justice, acknowledging our shared history, and valuing the cultures of first nations peoples.
