  • 0.3 Beliefs from Each Knowledge Domain

Version 1.1 March 2013                                               Previous Version

What can we really know in each knowledge domain?

What reasonable beliefs can we base our values on?

In these pages we show how we work out what beliefs are reasonable, and how we justify them.

You don’t have to be irrational or crazy to have a reasonable faith in things like truth and justice.  But why should you have this faith; what is it based on?  Many of us have trouble knowing what to believe, why we believe it, and how our beliefs affect our behaviour.

The choices we make depend on our understanding of what options are available to us.  Our fundamental choices reflect our core values.  So our values depend on our fundamental beliefs.

We examine each domain of knowledge, which we have broken down as follows:

    Analysis:

    1. Philosophy,

    2. Science and

    3. History.

Is it reasonable to break down all our relevant knowledge into these seven domains?

Click on feedback, or add a comment below, to tell us what you think, or suggest improvements.

    Expression:

    4. Religion and

    5. Culture.

    Action:

    6. Personal Practice and

    7. Politics

Global beliefs are covered in seven Parts, one for each domain, plus Part 8 to tie it together.

Some might say that our personal practice and political action aren’t knowledge domains.  But we all develop rules and guidelines in these areas, and these make up the knowledge base which guides our choices.  more

We summarise global beliefs in eight conclusions, one for each Part.

    Beliefs are transparent

All our beliefs are backed up by reason and the evidence; and

Anyone who is interested can learn how we justify each belief.

This is reflected in our core values of: Truth, Diversity and Beauty.

We wish for all people to live with transparency and openness.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of Country, throughout all colonised lands, and their connections to land, waters and community. We pay respect by giving voice to truth, values and social justice, acknowledging our shared history, and valuing the cultures of first nations peoples.
