  • 1.5.10.9 Social Goals

Version 1.0 October 2022                             (Previous Version)

This section began with discussions on the causality or chaos conundrum, whether we can believe in free will and assign blame and simply punish the wrongdoers, and whether traditional moralistic approaches to crime and punishment work.  It then presents a definition of Responsibility that is consistent with our other core values such as Truth, Diversity, Reality, Life, Love and Equality, followed by explanations of how this applies to reducing criminal behaviour, promoting life enhancing behaviours, redefining traditional concepts such as Justice and Mercy, and accepting personal responsibility for our actions.

All this discussion of core ethical values is based on fundamental assumptions regarding the behaviours we wish to manage, to restrict or to promote, and the implied personal and social choices this entails.  This subsection addresses those assumptions, providing the context for the philosophical approach in REALigion, foreshadowing some of the choices addressed in more detail in Parts 6 and 7 on Personal Practice and Political Action.

    In summary:

1.5.10.9 The behaviours we wish to suppress and those we wish to encourage are selected using our core values, and when relevant, derived, effecting and ancillary values.  For society as a whole we prefer behaviours that encourage the pursuit of Truth, that allow a Diversity of informed opinion, and that promote discussion about the nature of our shared public Reality.  We prefer behaviours that reflect core ethical values Life, Love, Equality and Responsibility.  We prefer behaviours the foster our sense of Beauty and foster Hope.

We determine our ideal society to be one that shares these values, judging by intentions as well as outcomes.  We inevitably have to balance our core values against one another, but while there is no well-defined path for finding the correct balance, in most circumstances we can make a choice that is good enough.  more (later)
