1.5.5.4 Contrary To God’s PlanVersion 1.0 November 2022         (Previous Version) A variation on the theme of unnatural implying immoral relates to doing things that are contrary to God’s plan. This assumes that God had/has a plan for how things should happen in the world. Perhaps we should talk about God’s design rather than plan but we will use plan here.  So they say: because this plan is from God it must be good – so anything contrary to God’s plan must be bad. ●    Firstly, as we say in Chapter 1.3 on Theology, we do not believe in god(s) or the supernatural. ●    But even if we did believe in God, then the argument still fails. ●    If God has a plan, there is virtually no agreement on what the plan is, so we can’t make general rules about how to not act contrary to the plan. This view is a variation of the idea the goodness comes from God, which we discuss in Section 1.5.3. We actually don’t know whether God is good, or whether God’s plan or design is good. If we could work this out ourselves, then we wouldn’t need God to tell us what to do, and we wouldn’t have to refer to his plan either. If we can't work it out for ourselves, then the whole argument is circular, and we simply follow God’s plan (however you interpret it) just because we do. In summary: 1.5.5.4 We can't decline to do some things because they are contrary to God’s wishes. ●         Firstly in REALigion we don’t believe in God anyway. ●         Secondly even if a god did exist, we don't know whether God is good. ●         Thirdly, even a good god exists, religions and sects within religions disagree on what God’s plan involves, so we don't actually know what is contrary to it.
