2.2 How the Universe Began: Cosmology

These are the questions we ask in the introduction (Section 0.1.6 â€“ paragraph 8):

If god did not make the world (or the universe), where did it come from?Â How did our universe begin?Â How come it is so finely tuned for human beings?Â Where did the forces of nature come from?Â Where did matter and energy come from, the elements and radiation?Â Where did the stars come from?

We may refine these as we develop this Chapter.

This chapter covers cosmology, in just enough detail so that we can work out what to believe and why, so that we can decide what to do, in our day to day life, and in the big decisions of life.

We plan to look at how we know what we know under the following topic headings. For now, we have indicated below the questions we intend to address and the main topics we intend to cover.

1. Existence Itself:	Can anyone explain where the universe came from?
2. Fundamentals:	What are forces, matter and energy?	Is it reasonable to break down this area into these topics at this level? Click on feedback, or add a comment below, to tell us if you agree or disagree, or suggest improvements.
3. Pre Big Bang Theories:	What came before the Big Bang?
4. The Big Bang:	What was this mysterious beginning?
5. The Plank Era:	When did gravity start to work?
6. The Inflation Era:	Why is our universe relatively even?
7. The Electroweak Era:	When did electromagnetism start?
8. The Particle Era:	What is matter, anti-matter, photons, protons and neutrons?
9. Nucleosynthesis Era:	When were the first elements made?
10. The Era of Atoms:	When was the first light? When did stars begin to shine?
11. The Lifecycle of Stars:	Where did other chemical elements come from?
12. The Birth of Galaxies:	When were the first galaxies created?
13. Dark Matter & Energy	What is this mysterious stuff, and what does it mean for us?
14. End of the Universe:	What will happen to the universe from now on?

This is the current summary of our conclusions in this area:

No-philosophy, science or religion can explain the mystery of existence itself, but science explains how the universe evolved after the big bang, how fundamental forces like gravity and electromagnetism evolved, matter emerged from the primal energy, how the elements formed, how galaxies arose and stars began to shine.
